I’m considering replacing my base C6 Corvette with a 987 Cayman S sometime in the next year or s o, but holy crap is it difficult to find an appropriate Cayman. Why are these things so rare???
Granted, I’m being picky, but there’s a lot of stuff to avoid with 987 Caymans. The base models are slower than most glaciers, so no thanks. The early models (everything before 2009) have the IMS bearing issue. Yeah, I know the shaft was upgraded for the 987, so it’s less prevalent of an issue than on the 986 Boxsters, but no thanks. That leaves me looking for a 2009-2012 Cayman S…and they’re rarer than hens teeth. There are currently just 2 manual transmission examples in the whole country...at any price (according to cars.com) . Hell, there are more limited edition Cayman R’s for sale than humdrum Cayman S’s.

Maybe everybody that owns one loves it so much they don’t want to sell?

I know someone who owns a facelifted first gen Cayman S 6MT. From what I can tell, you’ll have to pry the keys from his cold, dead hands. It’s one of those cars.

Yeah, they didn’t make a lot of cayman’s.
The economy kinda sucked in 09-12, so not a lot of people were out there buying a C
ayman.
I drove my 981 to a baseball game yesterday, and the parking lady stopped me to tell me how beautiful my car is. I actually get more compliments about my cayman form old wome
n than anyone else. It’s weird.
Cayman’s are the best P
orsche’s. They aren’t stuck sticking to a design from the 60's. I’d suggest looking for a 981 if you can. Personally, I think the side intake’s look cooler on the newer models
.

No disagreement here, the 981 looks WAY better. Interior as well.
But
I’m hoping to spend under $35K, and the 981 Cayman S’s seem to hover just above
the $50K mark, so sadly not in my cards.
Plus it’ll be a pure track car , and I’d feel bad about ripping out the interior of a newish Porsche.

People that own them, love them. The quirks are well known and accepted, the damn car is just way too much fun to drive. Speaking for myself I’ll never sell my Cayman, there’s nothing else out there that compares for the price.

A few more thoughts sir.
- Design is a subjective thing but to my eye the 987 is sexier than the 981 (especially the hips).
- The IMS thing is statistically insignificant. Do budget for a water pump at some point though
- None of the Caymans are rocketships, you buy them for the handling and braking. For that reason alone don’t rule out 2.7L base Caymans, they’re plenty fast
- The standard shifter is like raking leaves, a Porsche OEM short shifter is a must
Any questions, feel free to reach out

I think the same limitation to the cayman in that you can get a cayman or 2 year old 911.
